About New Music Tuesday

Why New Music Tuesday?

I love discovering new music, but I was getting tired of relying on streaming services to tell me what to listen to next.

I also love hearing live music—especially at the smaller venues that make New York's music scene what it is. There's something special about seeing an artist in a small room, before they've gotten big, or catching a band playing New York for the first time.

Every night, artists are being booked into venues all over the city. Booking agents, promoters, and venue teams spend a lot of time finding interesting new acts and getting them in front of audiences.

That is the work of music discovery, so I wanted to start there.

Each week, New Music Tuesday looks at upcoming shows around New York and builds a playlist from the artists performing. It's a way of listening to some of the music that's already making its way into the city's live music scene without having to go to every show.

But when you hear something you love? They're playing somewhere in New York in the next few weeks.

Just check the show listing, buy a ticket, grab a friend, and go! While you're there, buy a drink, a record, or some merch. Support the artist and the venue that gave them a stage.

Streaming has made discovering music incredibly easy, but artists make very little from each stream. Going to a show puts money directly into the hands of the artists and the venues that make live music possible.

Discover something new. Support live music. Support independent venues.

Why Tuesday?

For many years, Tuesday was the standard release day for new music in the United States and Canada. In 2015, the industry shifted to Fridays, establishing a simultaneous global release to combat piracy.

New Music Tuesday is a new tradition built on nostalgia for old rituals.

Every Tuesday: new artists, new shows, new music.

A Note on the Source

New Music Tuesday wouldn't exist without Oh My Rockness, the indispensable New York live-music listings site.

Their listings are the starting point for discovering what's happening across the city's venues. New Music Tuesday takes those shows and turns them into a way of discovering new music.

If you like New Music Tuesday, please consider supporting Oh My Rockness.

And, of course, go to a show. Support the venues. Support the artists making the music.
